Earth Day 2010
Last month, we observed Earth Hour where our lights were turned off for one hour as an act of participation in creating awareness about the impact of climate change and global warming.
Thanks to my friend Earthlingorgeous, I was reminded that on Thursday, April 22, is the observation of Earth Day 2010.
Does that mean we need to turn of our light for the whole day? Silly. No, we won’t do that. It’s a different celebration and participation would entail more commitment that just turning off lights.
This is the 40th Earth Day celebration and with all the things happening around us – earthquakes everywhere, tsunamis, typhoons and other calamities, we should be more concerned… and be conscious to do our part in saving our Mother Earth… for the sake of the children, and our children’s children.
The Earth Day is but one event to create consciousness of the things that are happening around us — an invitation for us to do our part, not just for one Earth Day, but everyday of our lives.
We could start on being aware of our energy consumption, like how many times the lights were left turned on even when not needed. Fixing leaking faucets in the house, and exerting efforts to segregate our garbage.
But all these could be just talks. Theories without application. There should be personal commitment for it to work.
Personally, we have been segregating our trash. All those recyclables that could be converted to cash, or what are usually known as “kalakal,” we give to our church for their fund raising campaign, the street sweeper, or the garbage collectors. That way, we dispose our garbage and at the same time, we were able to help others raise funds as well.
Earthlingorgeous has some interesting activities posted on her Earth Day post, where she poses her challenge, What Mark Will You Leave on Earth? You might want to check it out and read tips too on how you can do your part.
Let’s make everyday an Earth Day!
