A Puppy, Not a Guppy – Book tour and review

Irma is your typical fourth-grader – young and sweet, and yet could also be stubborn sometimes… especially when she knows what she wants.

And Irma wants a puppy!

Of course, which child doesn’t want a pet puppy? One that she could play with, run around with, or take a walk with. I’m sure, each one of one of us has wished for a puppy at one time or another when we were young – and Irma is no exception.

Unfortunately, Irma’s parents do not approve of her having a puppy for a number of reasons, like chewing up the furniture or tearing up house slippers. And no matter how she begs and pleads, Irma is not going to have a puppy.

Instead, Irma got a guppy. No, make that guppies.

Now, this much I can tell you right now – Irma doesn’t like guppies, at least not at the start.  And this is where you’ll see Irma’s kindheartedness.

She agreed to take care of the guppies to save them, lest they’ll be flushed down the toilet if no one took care of them. isn’t that a very kind gesture?

Still, Irma wanted a puppy and still saw the fishes as boring, until… you really don’t think I’m going to tell you, right?

Well, let me just put it this way, after reading Irma’s story, my daughter Angel now wants to have her own guppies too.

Really, the book can teach your children how to appreciate what they have and make the most of it, instead of wishing and whining for something that they don’t have.

And Irma is a good role model.

A Puppy, Not a Guppy is written by Holly Jahangiri, a professional writer with more than 20 years of experience in technical writing, freelancing, fiction, poetry and editing. She also wrote another children’s book – Trockle, which was about a lovable monster under Stephen’s bed.

Illustrations to the book were by Ryan who has done a number of works on children’s books like Spider in Our Mailbox and Bait for Lunch. Both are from 4RV Publishing, the same publishers who brings you A Puppy, Not a Guppy and Trockle.

Good morning, Mr. Roy and Miss Jena! Omigosh, I thought you were going to tell them THE SECRET! ::giggles::

What a great book review, Mr. Roy. I think Jimmy and the guppies and me are getting more famous every day! How old is Angel? You want me to mail you some guppies next time Jimmy’s got too many? (Can you mail guppies to the Philippines?)

    Hi Irma!

Sorry I wasn’t able to reply immediately. I hope you’re enjoying the tour so far.

Nope, we’re not going to tell our secrets, are we?

Angel is 11, am not sure though if you can mail them. But thanks anyway, knowing her, I’m sure she’s already looking for ’sources’ here.

Maybe she could go ask someone at the Manila Ocean Park Fish Spa. Did you see Mr. Rey’s feet getting nibbled by fishies at http://www.reyjr.com? That was funny! I guess they think toes taste yummy! Bet Angel would think that was funny, too.

sshh… Angel is very receptive to suggestions ;)

but don’t worry, an aquarium in the house is one of my future plans

i’m also curious about that fish spa, i might try it someday too

It is so good to see you reach the Philippine cyberspace and I am sure you will have a wonderful time here. At least there are a lot of kids who could relate with your predicament. I once owned guppies and puppies. he he he.

One time when I was in grade school I made an aquarium using plastic and tape. Unfortunately, there were leaks everywhere so I settled for a fish bowl. I used to watch the guppies nightly as they follow the beam from my flashlight.

Those were the good old days.

Hahahahahah! Oh, no, did the fishies survive, Doc? Miss Holly says to tell you she used to try to build tree houses and snowball forts with just about as much talent and success.

    Hm.

I think that means it’s amazing she lived long enough to write my book.

    I like it here.

Can I have some more kutsinta? I don’t want that balut stuff. Mr. Rey promised me he wouldn’t even tease me about it.

a doorway is definitely bigger than a cap Irma. yeah, we better take hold of ourselves ;)
