Google cutting down “just under 200″ of its employees
Could an Internet giant like the Google be affected by the global economic crisis? I have just been to the official Google blog and read they are cutting down about 200 employees from its roster.
Although the title of the blog post doesn’t signify downsizing but rather a change in their sales and marketing organizations, but farther down the article Omid Kordestani, Senior VP, Global Sales and Business Development of Google said they “plan to reduce the number of roles within our sales and marketing organizations by just under 200 globally.”
Kordestani said that since Google grew quickly in a short period of time, they were not able to set everything right, which resulted in overlapping organizations that duplicated functions as well as makes decision-making complicated.
Letting go of 200 positions is part of their restructuring program in order to improve the company’s “effectiveness and efficiency as a business.” He said however that every person will be given enough time to try other positions in the other organizations, and provide severance packages to those who will be leaving the organization.
It really seems that nobody is spared from the global crisis, although they won’t admit to it, the decision of Google is partly affected by the present world condition.
Kordestani, meanwhile was said to decline bonus payment that he is supposed to recieve amounting to $1.4 million. A gesture that should be emulated by top executives who have received exhuberant amount amidst the global crisis.
