A happier ending for Mang Meliton

I’m sure you’ve heard about Meliton Zamora, or Mang Meliton as he was commonly called. He is the University of the Philippines (UP) janitor who received 92-cents as retirement pay. That is after deducting the 501 days of absences he incurred in his 40 years of service.

Things got better for him as his retirement pay was recomputed by Civil Service Commission (CSC) and he has been granted P32,610.75 for “humanitarian considerations and after a thorough review of his service record,” based on a statement issued by CSC Assistant Commissioner Anicio de Lima.

To be honest, the amount may not really last them for a long time, unless he is able to start a business with it, but it is really a much better deal than the 92-cent check that they are giving Mang Meliton before.

Mang Meliton story became famous because of his unselfish efforts to help cash-strapped students of UP before. He would always stand as guarantor for students who are not capable of paying their tuition fees then.

The UP Alumni learned of Mang Meliton’s plight that they have organized a campaign to help the students’ hero. Donations have started pouring in to help Mang Meliton and his family.

They even organized a concert to promote a CD which Mang Meliton recorded before to sell. This CD has been sold in the organized event for him.

This is indeed a happy ending for someone like Mang Meliton who have always seek out to help others, without expecting anything in return.

Kudos to you Mang Meliton!

(P.S. search for the name Mang Meliton on Google or Yahoo! and you’ll lots of testimonies from students who have been helped by this great man.)
